The 19th Wonca Wolrd Conferences of Family Doctors presents the opportunity to get in touch with the latest scientific breakthroughs in family medicine, concerning research as well as clinical and lecturing issues.
The Scientific Committee is unsparing in its effort to offer the audience the highest academic and scientific experience. Eight key note speakers will guide the plenary sessions, being selected due to their outstanding leadership and scientific and technical capacities. Each of them will present the audience a topic related to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) being the principal theme of Wonca Cancun 2010.
Family doctors from all over the world will be able to listen to the most innovative social, anthropological, economic and clinical approaches in child health, reproductive and women's health, poverty, education and health, environment and health, HIV/AIDS and gender equity. The opening conference will be focusing on doing a careful analysis of the function of family medicine for the MDGs. The closing conference is aimed at concluding the Congress with a controversial subject: The future of family medicine.

Background: Jan De Maeseneer (°1952, Gent) graduated as a Medical Doctor in 1977 at Ghent University (Belgium). Since 1978, he has been working part-time as a family physician in the community health centre Botermarkt in Ledeberg, a deprived area in the city of Ghent. From 1978 to 1981, he worked as a part-time research-assistant in health promotion at the Department of Public Health (Prof. Dr. K. Vuylsteek). Since 1981, he has been working as a part-time assistant at the Department of Family Medicine and since 1991, he chairs the department. Since 1.10.2008 he is the vice-dean for strategic planning at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.
Academic career: Jan De Maeseneer is involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, training and research. He actually chairs the Educational Committee (since 1997) in charge of a fundamental reform of the undergraduate curriculum (from a discipline-based towards an integrated patient-based approach). This curriculum has been evaluated very positively by an international Accreditation Board and has been awarded in 2005 a special quality label for its community orientation and social accountability. He is board member of the Interuniversity Flemish Consortium for vocational training of family medicine and he chairs the working party for family medicine of the Belgian High Council for medical specialists and family physicians (1998). In 2004 Prof. De Maeseneer received the 'WONCA-award for excellence in health care: the Five-Star Doctor' at the 17th World Conference of Family Doctors in Orlando (USA). In 2008 he received a 'Doctor Honoris Causa' degree at the Universidad Mayor de San Simon in Cochabamba (Bolivia).
Research: The research activities are focused on: epidemiology of general practice, functioning of GPs, prescription behaviour, medical decision making, medical education, health systems research, equity in health care, telematics in health care, health outcome and health and poverty. In 1989 he obtained his Ph.D. with the thesis: 'The functioning of 94 GP trainers at the State University of Ghent: an explorative research'. He has published three books: 'Family Medicine: an exploration', 'Telematics in primary care in Europe' and 'Family Medicine in the 21st century: looking back at the future'. He wrote articles in several journals on health education, epidemiology, medical decision making, medical education, quality of care, community oriented primary care, interdisciplinary team work, training in general practice, health and poverty, health in developing countries. Prof. De Maeseneer is the author of more than 100 scientific publications. Fifty of them have been published in international journals with peer review-system. He also has given many lectures at international and national conferences. Since 1996 he is a member of the editorial board of the “European Journal of General Practiceâ€, of the WICC (Wonca International Classification Committee) and of the Research Committee of Wonca. Social accountability: In 1990-1991, he has been advisor on primary health care of the federal Minister of Health. Since 1997, he is also a member of the Flemish Health Council. He is a member of the Advisory Committee on Medical Training of the EU and of the Scientific Advisory Board of the 'Organisation for Accreditation and Quality Assurance' in Switzerland. From 2006 to 2008, Prof. J. De Maeseneer was a member of the Knowledge Network 'Health System' of the WHO Commission on Social Determinants of Health.
International cooperation: Prof. De Maeseneer has been involved in the development of various programs of international cooperation and student exchange (University of Cochabamba in Bolivia, University of Cape Town in South Africa, University Yaounde I in Cameroon, University of Makerere in Kampala, University of Science and Technology in Mbarara – Uganda, University of Cuenca – Ecuador and Pontifica Universidad Catolica de Ecuador - Quito). He is promoter of the VLIR-Own Initiatives project on 'Optimisation of family medicine training in Southern and Eastern Africa' that has an important impact on the development of primary health care. He is promotor of the Primafamed-network (EU-Edulink).
In September 2006, Jan De Maeseneer was involved in the Network TUFH-conference in Ghent: 'Improving social accountability in education, research and service delivery'. Since September 2007, Jan De Maeseneer is the Secretary General of the Network 'Towards Unity for Health' (www.the-networktufh.org).

Studied in the medical faculty of Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico (UNAM), where in 1973 he received the title of medical surgeon with honory mention. Between 1976 and 1978 he conducted post-graduate studies in the field of community medicine in the University of Birmingham, England. In january 1974 he joined the UNAM medical faculty as a member of the academic staff. In the UNAM he has been the General Family and Community Medicine department head, Director-General of Academic Extension, Director-General of Planning, General Secretary of the University, and General Coordinator of the University Reform. In february 2003 he was designated Director of the Faculty of Medicine, a responsability which he completed during two periods. In november 2007 he was designated Rector by the UNAM Governing Body, a post which he currently holds. In the federal public administration he has occupied diverse posts amongst which are included Director-General of Public Health for Mexico City, Director-General of Medical Services in Mexico City, General Secretary of the Mexican Social Security Institute, President of the Foundation for Change XXI, and President of the National Institute of Ecology. In the Secretary of Government worked as head of the Subsecretaries of Population, Migratory Services and also Government. In the Secretary of Health he was head of the Health Services and Sectorial Coordination. He has published 56 articles in some of the most notable nacional and international scientific journals, principally concerning the themes of education, public health and administration of health services. Aditionally he has published 23 chapters in ACADEMIC BOOKS. He has been an advisor to the World Health Organization and different health organizations in Mexico and the world. He has several Honoris Causa Ph.D. and forms part of many scientific and medical organizations.

Catherine trained in paediatrics in London, UK and epidemiology and public health in Baltimore, USA. She then worked at the MRC Environmental Epidemiology Unit, University of Southampton, UK , and with regional and national Government. She is now Professor of Public Health and Epidemiology at the UCL Institute of Child Health. Her research interests are in child public health, particularly physical growth, inequalities in health, and the use of research for public policy. She is also Chair of the Public Health Interventions Advisory Committee of NICE (the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence) and Programme Director for the National Institute of Health ResearchÂ’s Public Health Research Programme.

Since founding the feminist group, Women in Nigeria, in 1982, Bene Madunagu has become an internationally respected advocate for women's sexual and reproductive health and rights. Seeking a new strategy to achieve her goal of women's political and social empowerment, Bene cofounded the Girls' Power Initiative (GPI) with Grace Osakue in 1993. In 1995, Bene, who has a PhD in Botany, received an award from the MacArthur Foundation Fund for Leadership Development. In 2004, she became the general coordinator of DAWN (Development Alternatives with Women for a New Era), a network of women scholars and activists from the economic South who are committed to working for economic justice, gender justice, and democracy. Member of the National Steering Committee for the Implementation of the Electronic version of the National Curriculum on Family Life and HIV/AIDS Education in Nigeria (since 2006), and Co-Director of the Nigerian Partnership for Safe Motherhood (NPSM).
